Turquoise and multi-color bead necklaces, strung at Santo Domingo Pueblo. Most of the turquoise is Kingman turquoise from Arizona. Lupe Lovato has been making jewelry for more than 50 years; Robert Tenorio's beads are rounded one at a time by hand, and Joanne and Joe Ray Garcia cut and drill their own disks and marble beads.

Five strands of fine black jet heishe fall together in loose parallel rows. Small accent beads of turquoise, reddish pipestone, serpentine and pale cream are spaced along every strand, so flecks of color show through the black as the strands shift and turn. The strands gather into polished silver cones at each side, and at the back a clasp catches anywhere along a length of silver chain, which is what lets the length run from 18 to 22 inches, close at the base of the neck or lower over a collar. Because the base color is black, it sits easily with other turquoise pieces and with plain clothes alike.
Jose Rosetta is a bead maker at Santo Domingo Pueblo, and plain heishe like the jet discs on these strands is his specialty. Much of what he cuts goes to other artists at the pueblo for their own necklaces; this one he strung and finished himself, and he seldom leaves the village.
